Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Remembering a Ghastly Legend 1 month ago

Thanks for a very nice tribute to Sir Graves, Ricky. I was a little too old for Deming’s schtick but would tune in because some of the movies were pretty dang good. Like my substance-abusing peers, I eventually […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Christianity vs. Science Fiction 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Nicely put, Gary. Science plays a great role in everyday life and is the path to material improvement (or, alas, destruction) in the future, but it doesn’t have all the answers.

I, for one, find it easier to […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Christianity vs. Science Fiction 1 month, 4 weeks ago

Well, I haven’t conducted any polls, but virtually all the Christians I know, whether regular church-goers or lax believers, believe in at least some aspects of evolution. Maybe it’s the neck of the woods I live […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Christianity vs. Science Fiction 1 month, 4 weeks ago

I suspect the rancor between Christians and SF/F fans stems from the creationism-evolution dispute. What non-religious fans might not realize is that many devout Christians fully embrace the theory of evolution. […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Jules Verne and Amazing Stories 1 month, 4 weeks ago

Thanks for an excellent article, Duane. Translators have a tough job, and one unsuited for the spirit of the original work easily can turn a piece of gold into dross.

    I read Verne’s “greatest hits” as a kid — […]

Gene Mierzejewski wrote a new post, Who’s the Boss When It Comes to British Stamps 2 months, 1 week ago

ThumbnailWhile we still don’t know who will grace the U.S. postage stamps saluting science fiction authors this year, we do know Who — The Doctor, that is — will appear on a set of British stamps that will be issued March […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Of Blacklists and Freedoms: DC, Superman and Orson Scott Card 2 months, 1 week ago

One reason why social and political discourse is in such sad shape today is that too many people have adopted the 1960s dictum “The personal is political.” Without a dividing line between the personal and the […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Let Us Now Praise Betty and Veronica 2 months, 1 week ago

“Let’s Spend the Night Together” was banned on nearly every pop station in America when it came out, which is why the excruciatingly dull B-side “Ruby Tuesday” became a hit. Ed Sullivan made the Stones perform the […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Cyberstorm: Pack Up Your Water Bottles 2 months, 1 week ago

This book sounds so intriguing that I’m tempted to finally buy a Kindle; the only thing stopping me is the 300 or so dead tree books in my “must read” pile in my library.

BTW, have you read William R […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Let Us Now Praise Betty and Veronica 2 months, 1 week ago

Nice column, Juliet. I spent many an hour as a kid wandering the far-from-mean streets of Riverdale with Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Jughead, Moose, Midge and the rest of the gang. They weren’t exciting like […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, The Fed Puts Stamps of Approval on Science Fiction Authorship 2 months, 3 weeks ago

UPDATE: According to the March 4 issue of Linn’s Stamp News, the science fiction writers stamp issue will honor FIVE authors, not four as originally expected. There’s no clue yet about which authors will appear on […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, The Fed Puts Stamps of Approval on Science Fiction Authorship 2 months, 3 weeks ago

Patrick, it’s highly unlikely the Postal Service will honor a living person on a stamp anytime soon. The policy change, which made headlines in 2011, was based on a rather dubious legal loophole uncovered by a […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Why Piracy is Never Okay 3 months, 1 week ago

It’s a bit more complicated than that, Geoffrey. When a friend of mine was writing a book about Hollywood musicals a few years ago, he wanted to quote snippets from some of the songs. Not the entire lyrics, mind […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, Why Piracy is Never Okay 3 months, 1 week ago

I’m a firm believer in not only the primacy of intellectual property rights but also the need for (yet more) copyright reform. For most of the 20th century, a copyright was valid for 28 years and could be renewed […]

Gene Mierzejewski commented on the post, The Fed Puts Stamps of Approval on Science Fiction Authorship 3 months, 1 week ago

Excellent point, David. The USPS announced its decision to honor living people on stamps with great fanfare in 2011, but there’s been plenty of backtracking behind the scenes ever since. While the change hasn’t […]

About

Amazing Stories was originally published by the Experimenter Publishing Company in 1926 and was the world's first science fiction magazine. Its owner, publisher and first editor was Hugo Gernsback who has been called the Father of Science Fiction. Amazing Stories was published continuously - by different publishers - until 1995. It was resurrected between 1998 and 2000 and again between 2004 and 2005. Now it is back again, published by a new version of the Experimenter Publishing Company, in a new format, with a bright new future awaiting it.
