John M Whalen commented on the post, A Commissioning Editor Speaks: David Moore of Abaddon Books 2 days, 20 hours ago

[Don't know what happened. The reply box closed up and didn't let me finish. To continue:]

Before this era of self-publishing, the public didn’t have to sift through the drek to find the gems. Publishers and […]

    David,

Thanks for the addendum. You do hear about the self published book that gets picked up by a publishing house , but when you consider the number of self-pubbed books coming out month after month, with the […]

John M Whalen commented on the post, A Commissioning Editor Speaks: David Moore of Abaddon Books 5 days, 20 hours ago

“There are two worlds existing side by side: in one, books are free or very cheap, and there are no gatekeepers. It has its own market, made up of the type of reader who isn’t particularly sensitive to the quality […]

John M Whalen commented on the post, Interview with Award-Winning Author Bradley Denton 1 week ago

Great interview with good questions and thoughtful answers. I like what he said about not always liking writing but loving the story. I see so many book written by authors who seem to be in love with the way they […]

John M Whalen wrote a new post, Oblivion 1 month, 3 weeks ago

ThumbnailMany reviewers have already pointed out the fact that director Joseph Koskinski’s Oblivion borrows quite a bit from a number of earlier science fiction films, includng Moon, Planet of the Apes, the Matrix, even […]

John M Whalen commented on the post, Ten Questions You Need to Ask Your Characters Before They Can Stay In Your Story 3 months ago

I really enjoyed reading this article, Nina. Very well done. I especially thought questions No. 4 and 9 were excellent and two things that all writers should pay attention to.

John M Whalen commented on the post, Crossroads: Riding into Space – Westerns and Speculative Fiction 3 months, 2 weeks ago

Wellll, since you asked. My favorite western film is “Comanche Station.” This is a film directed by Budd Boetticher starring Randolph Scott. One of a series of films they shot out at Lone Pine Calif, in the late […]

John M Whalen commented on the post, Mars Babylon: A Review of John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood by Michael D. Sellers 3 months, 2 weeks ago

Sellers does a good job pointing out the different philosophies Pixar and Disney have about moviemaking, and how the differences made it difficult for Stanton to get what he wanted in the final product. And […]

Thanks, Steven. Look at it this way, to a company that can afford to spend $4 billion to acquire Star Wars, $200 million is chump change.

    Daniel,

Nice to have your input. I read and enjoyed Death to Jar Jar Binks. Good points. Yes, the marketing was a nightmare. But I thought the movie was a bomb anyway. Didn’t like the casting of the two leads, […]

About

Amazing Stories was originally published by the Experimenter Publishing Company in 1926 and was the world's first science fiction magazine. Its owner, publisher and first editor was Hugo Gernsback who has been called the Father of Science Fiction. Amazing Stories was published continuously - by different publishers - until 1995. It was resurrected between 1998 and 2000 and again between 2004 and 2005. Now it is back again, published by a new version of the Experimenter Publishing Company, in a new format, with a bright new future awaiting it.
