MD Jackson wrote a new post, Mechanical Men and Women 5 days ago

It’s one of Science Fiction’s classic tropes and has been responsible for some of the most beloved characters in the genre — robots.

Robots are almost pure design personified. The whole concept of a robot […]

MD Jackson commented on the post, Sexism and the SFWA 1 week, 4 days ago

Mark Twain admonishes writers to “Use the right word, not its second cousin.”. The commenter rightly points out that I have used the second cousin in this case. I should have stated that they were opinion pieces […]

MD Jackson wrote a new post, Sexism and the SFWA 1 week, 5 days ago

    Thumbnail

So there’s a brouhaha brewing around the Science Fiction Writers of America and accusations of blatant sexism within that organization. (Actually it’s more like a raging storm in some corners).

    The […]

Richard Madden, because, apparently he`s not doing much anymore.

You probably don’t know his name. You may not even know that there is a name behind the distinctive design, but you have very likely seen his work or a derivative of it. You will likely recognize it if you see […]

MD Jackson commented on the post, Great Science Fiction Artists – Jerome Podwil 3 weeks, 2 days ago

I’m not that familiar with Podwell’s work, although I have seen it. I’ll have to check it out further. And the class you teach sounds interesting!

MD Jackson wrote a new post, Jodorowsky’s Dune 3 weeks, 5 days ago

    Thumbnail

Recently a documentary had its debut at the Cannes Film Festival called Jodorowsky’s Dune. The documentary by filmmaker Frank Pavich, examines a very early attempt to make a movie based on Frank Herbert’s […]

Those are all great examples. That Moody Blues album is one of my favorites. I have it in heavy rotation in my itunes!

MD Jackson commented on the post, To Star Trek or to Star Wolf? 1 month ago

Gerrold’s novel;s are great, but a Star Wolf series could easily be a kick-ass show (rivaling BSG if it’s done right). I’d love to see this campaign succeed. I really want to see this show!

MD Jackson wrote a new post, Another Look at SF/Fantasy Record Album Art 1 month ago

ThumbnailTwo weeks ago I wrote about science fiction album art and I focused on two bands; Klaatu and Hawkwind. This week I’m going to continue with the theme of album art but I’m going to do a broader overview and look at […]

MD Jackson wrote a new post, Ray Harryhausen: Concept Artist 1 month, 1 week ago

“Without Ray Harryhausen, there would likely have been no STAR WARS”
    George Lucas.
“What we do now digitally with computers, Ray did digitally long before but without computers. Only with his digits.”
    Terry […]

MD Jackson wrote a new post, Vinyl Albums, KLAATU and the Warrior at the Edge of Time 1 month, 2 weeks ago

ThumbnailLet’s travel back in time, you and I. Let’s go back to a time before music was delivered in packets of data. Let’s travel back to a time of bell bottoms, long hair and muscle cars. Let’s go back to the […]

MD Jackson wrote a new post, Four Color Heroes! or: Superman at 75! 1 month, 3 weeks ago

So Superman is 75 years old. That’s astounding.

What’s even more astounding is how good he looks, given that he is now a senior citizen. Special cases like Alex Ross’ Kingdom Come notwithstanding, it seems […]

MD Jackson wrote a new post, Cities in Science Fiction 2 months ago

The events in Boston at the beginning of this week were an awful tragedy and, naturally all our hearts go out to the victims. Boston is one of the oldest cities in the US and, like all cities, it has a […]

MD Jackson wrote a new post, The Cover with no Cover Art 2 months, 1 week ago

    Thumbnail

Books need a cover. At the very least one needs to know the title of the book and usually who wrote it. Those are basics. But the cover of a book is the first point of interface between the book itself and the […]

MD Jackson wrote a new post, The Amazing Virgil Finlay 2 months, 2 weeks ago

Whenever I think about black-and-white illustrations from the old science fiction magazines, it is always the work of Virgil Finlay that I picture in my head. And why not? The man was a genius with a pen and […]

MD Jackson commented on the post, David Fincher’s Alien 3, and What It Can Teach Us 2 months, 2 weeks ago

The autopsy was THE most harrowing part of the film for me. Alien 3 replaced the sense of “cosmic horror” established in the first two films with a sort of nihilistic existentialism. Instead of giving the viewer […]

MD Jackson commented on the post, The Dumbest Part of The Lord of the Rings 2 months, 2 weeks ago

Ha! I’d never thought of it like that! I though the worst part was having the death of Boromir, one of the most exciting scenes in the book, happen “offstage”! I suppose what Tolkein does probably echoes scenes in […]

MD Jackson wrote a new post, Now with even MORE Pulp! 2 months, 4 weeks ago

About

Amazing Stories was originally published by the Experimenter Publishing Company in 1926 and was the world's first science fiction magazine. Its owner, publisher and first editor was Hugo Gernsback who has been called the Father of Science Fiction. Amazing Stories was published continuously - by different publishers - until 1995. It was resurrected between 1998 and 2000 and again between 2004 and 2005. Now it is back again, published by a new version of the Experimenter Publishing Company, in a new format, with a bright new future awaiting it.
