Morgana Santilli commented on the post, What’s Your Type? 1 day, 4 hours ago

One more tidbit, just after having re-read your response: Skin color is really not what makes a race. There are entire groups of people with white skin who are considered people of color (I’m thinking of East […]

Also, I don’t think there’s anything very wrong with liking something even when you know that it’s problematic. If LOTR /is/ racist, I don’t think that means it should be banned or excluded from reading lists or […]

I do see your point, but I kind of wonder…like, again with the Orcs…I realize they’re not supposed to be human, but they speak and interact with people and have a culture and a society. They are a different […]

Morgana Santilli wrote a new post, East vs. West: Comic Book Showdown 1 day, 7 hours ago

ThumbnailThough my position here, such as it is, is that of “anime blogger,” I think that my real interest in media from the Land of the Rising Sun is comic books, otherwise known as manga.  Despite being exposed to […]

Morgana Santilli commented on the post, What’s Your Type? 4 days, 4 hours ago

This is a topic that is very important to me, since I think that the issues presented in fiction very much represent the way we think as a society. But I’m a little confused as to the point you’re trying to make? […]

Morgana Santilli wrote a new post, The Real Manga Blues: A “Me and the Devil Blues” Review 1 week, 1 day ago

ThumbnailOf all the potential stories to succeed phenomenally in manga form, not many people expect a story centering around blues music in the deep American South to qualify.  Even less likely is a story about blues great […]

Morgana Santilli commented on the post, Sequential Wednesdays #12 – Of Panels & Piracy 1 week, 6 days ago

Well put, Zach! You probably already know this, but there are many authors (I’m thinking of Neil Gaiman in particular) who actually don’t much care about pirating, because it means that people are reading their […]

Morgana Santilli wrote a new post, Hayao Miyazaki and Epic Fantasy 2 weeks, 1 day ago

ThumbnailSince taking on this blogging position, I have been struggling to find works that would appeal to the audience that Amazing Stories has, particularly those who are interested in fantasy.  I would categorize a […]

Morgana Santilli commented on the post, Art in Action: A Bakuman Review 3 weeks, 1 day ago

Yes! There were definitely moments where I rolled my eyes and was like, “Right, this is shounen anime, so the boys have to act macho” – like the time Saiko gets hospitalized. But it definitely is a great series, […]

    Thumbnail

I spend a lot of time lately complaining about the state of anime and the series that have been created within the last five or so years.  In the course of this tirade, shounen manga has often been the main […]

Beautifully written, as usual! Your father is, indeed, a wonderful parent, and I know that you will also encourage any offspring you might have in the same way. I hope he is having a fabulous birthday – and how […]

Morgana Santilli commented on the post, The Young Animators’ Project, and What We Can Hope For 4 weeks ago

Yeah, I’ve been having a hard time lately. Most of what I’ve been watching is older stuff, and I was concerned that I’ve just been away from the fandom too long to appreciate the new stuff. But it appears that […]

Morgana Santilli wrote a new post, The Young Animators’ Project, and What We Can Hope For 4 weeks, 1 day ago

ThumbnailIt has recently been brought to my attention that every year, the Japanese government pays a large sun of money to a handful of animation studios so that those studios will each produce a half-hour long piece, […]

Morgana Santilli commented on the post, Acceptance or Exploitation? 1 month ago

Also, it’s important to point out that writers who effectively use stereotypes know how to manipulate them so that they aren’t going to be harmful to the characterization or to what a reader takes away.

    And I […]

Morgana Santilli commented on the post, Acceptance or Exploitation? 1 month ago

I’m not talking about just gay stereotypes – which is why I mentioned my Italian heritage and the stereotypes that revolve around that in my last comment. And why James mentioned minstrelsy and the stereotypes […]

Morgana Santilli commented on the post, Acceptance or Exploitation? 1 month ago

Also, if breaking a stereotype is “too much trouble,” then maybe an author who feels that way should either stop writing or only write about people they understand. If trying to make the most out of a character […]

The reason that there are people who fulfill these stereotypes is because these stereotypes are perpetuated such that people believe that is the proper way to be have within a given identity. It’s a vicious cycle. […]

Morgana Santilli commented on the post, Acceptance or Exploitation? 1 month ago

Certainly, that’s a very important distinction. It makes me very uncomfortable when a character’s sexuality is played for laughs (although Jack from “Will and Grace” is kind of hilarious, but I don’t think that’s […]

About

Amazing Stories was originally published by the Experimenter Publishing Company in 1926 and was the world's first science fiction magazine. Its owner, publisher and first editor was Hugo Gernsback who has been called the Father of Science Fiction. Amazing Stories was published continuously - by different publishers - until 1995. It was resurrected between 1998 and 2000 and again between 2004 and 2005. Now it is back again, published by a new version of the Experimenter Publishing Company, in a new format, with a bright new future awaiting it.
