Ricky L. Brown wrote a new post, It’s All About the Vessel 6 days, 10 hours ago

ThumbnailIn 1961, Science Fiction producer director Irwin Allen brought us the film Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. The fast paced disaster movie revolved around a newly designed submarine called the U.S.O.S. Seaview. The […]

Ricky L. Brown wrote a new post, Don’t Quote Me on This, But… 1 week, 3 days ago

ThumbnailSure there are the staple quotes most fans of the genre can recognize. My family can recite so many lines from Star Wars that the list could significantly exceed the number of lines “not” quoted from the movie. […]

Ricky L. Brown wrote a new post, Books That Never Were – Farewell Atlantis 2 weeks, 3 days ago

ThumbnailOne of the most influential elements of genre fiction can come from the allusion to classic works of literature the audience is familiar with. Odds are pretty good that if a villain quotes Poe to infuse fear in a […]

Ricky L. Brown wrote a new post, Hey, Who Shot First? Again! 3 weeks, 4 days ago

ThumbnailWhich came first, the book or the movie? Often the movie industry draws on the fandom of its audience to garnishee more revenue. The novelization of a new film is an ideal way to gain exposure as well as fill the […]

And don’t forget about having to get up out of your favorite spot by the telly just to change the channel. Times sure were tough back then.

Thanks Gene. We could sure use more icons like these to educate the next generation of fans who might appreciate the roots of science fiction and horror films.

Ricky L. Brown wrote a new post, Remembering a Ghastly Legend 1 month ago

ThumbnailAs a lifelong fan of science fiction and horror, I can’t help but feel obligated (Okay, it’s more like biased selfishness) to introduce my children to the genre. But as they seem more focused on their media […]

Ricky L. Brown wrote a new post, Discovering Planet Stories 1 month, 1 week ago

ThumbnailAs a fan of the classic Science Fiction and Fantasy pulp magazines (exemplified by my thrill to be involved here at Amazing Stories), I find myself a bit giddy whenever I stumble upon an old edition. But as the […]

Ricky L. Brown wrote a new post, The Hugo Triple Play 1 month, 2 weeks ago

ThumbnailWith only a few short stories nominated for this year’s Hugo Award, I thought I’d take a moment to give them a closer look. The scarcity of the list and the implications of such a small field has already […]

Ricky L. Brown wrote a new post, You Can Still Catch the Runaway Skyscraper 1 month, 3 weeks ago

ThumbnailIt’s time to once again return to the red book. I’m talking about that 1969 copy of The Best of Amazing, which continues to provide timeless adventures from long ago. After first appearing in the February 22, 1919 […]

Ricky L. Brown commented on the post, Finding Women in Science Fiction 1 month, 4 weeks ago

Ha-ha! Sorry, with my reading idiocracies, I often reserve to the “demented” title for myself.

If more readers used your approach, perhaps we might not have quite the discrepancy in author genders we have […]

Ricky L. Brown commented on the post, Finding Women in Science Fiction 1 month, 4 weeks ago

I’m not sure constituting a 50% gender rule is necessary as long as the work is good. But it’s definitely a good idea to remain aware of the issue, so long as the choices do not sway drastically one way or the […]

Thanks for the link. The notion that an “audience is expected to be” a specific gender is indeed unfortunate. Not sure if publishers are to blame or society in general.

About

Amazing Stories was originally published by the Experimenter Publishing Company in 1926 and was the world's first science fiction magazine. Its owner, publisher and first editor was Hugo Gernsback who has been called the Father of Science Fiction. Amazing Stories was published continuously - by different publishers - until 1995. It was resurrected between 1998 and 2000 and again between 2004 and 2005. Now it is back again, published by a new version of the Experimenter Publishing Company, in a new format, with a bright new future awaiting it.
