In half a century of Doctor Who, the role of companion has evolved: no longer is their function mainly to sprain an ankle, and create an opportunity for the Doctor to come to the rescue. In the revival of the show, the companions are fleshed out as characters with distinct personalities, who do not only exist in relation to the Doctor.
